The world has seen the lost of a monumental figure in near history. An entrepreneur who can't spell 'success', most probably, he lived up to it non the less. He- who- shall- not- need- to- be- named, one of the King of Gambling in the region.
Ok, so he made a great fortune, and die rich. Now this is what make the difference between the East and West. Westerners would think to die rich is a humiliation. But Easterners, would rather cluster up their wealth and give it to their heir. Not that I'm against that, but the curse of 'Wealth lasting less than 3 generations' has been rooted in the civilization since untold time.
So when this guy died, it was the greatest funeral ever in the nation's memory (I'm not against that). Scores of people turned up, and each were given a sum of money for their appearance. Yeah you heard me right, they give away CASH! for the Lims, they get like RM500 for sharing some forgotten root, others got around RM100 to 200, also base on their root. No ones ever done this, don't think anyone would be next to do this!
For that amount of cash, wouldn't it be useful in some other places? What about the needy? So much for philanthropy. Guess what, Warren Buffett and Bill Gates would not go down that road.
Also fascinating is how different cultures' perception on death. I guess that really is a designated idea, but generally, people fear death rather to embrace it. Some glorify Death. The ability to coupe with death, is a sign of an evolved civilization.
To go deep into that issue would be under the Zen label, maybe next time. Good luck meeting Joe Black, Uncle Lim! Good journey, your memories had and will nourish so many more dreams, gamblers and entrepreneurs. Come to think of it, they are very similar too.
